Green Woods is Composting to Zero Waste
Budget: $2500

Green Woods proposes to expand their recycling practices and develop a composting habit to reduce lunch wastes to “zero”. This grant would be used for composting receptacles for the lunch rooms, composting tumblers for the outdoor gardening space and the resources to teach the children about composting.

One of Green Woods Charter School’s mission is to, through small, constant steps, have the children develop the habit of improvement, doing things better, little by little, all the time. The school strives to teach the children about the environment and to be conscious of the effect their tiny footprints have on Mother Earth. The school has adopted a culture of no wrapper or packaging waste on Wednesdays. The goal would be to expand this culture to everyday and beyond to a “no waste” day. To support this goal, Green Woods proposes to expand their recycling practices and develop a composting habit to reduce their lunch wastes to “zero”. Green Woods would use this grant money to purchase indoor composting receptacles for the lunch rooms, composting tumblers to be part of their outdoor gardening space and the resources to teach and inform the best practices for composting. All of the children will learn about the composting process, its effect on improving the soil and impact on the environment. By starting the practice and developing the habit of composting, the children will have the ability to see first-hand how their small steps can help reduce waste and create a valuable resource. Each class is in charge of caring for a raised garden bed and the newly created compost will be a great asset to support growing plants for eating and learning. The use of the compost receptacles along with recycling will greatly reduce the amount of waste the school produces, reducing the burden on the local landfills. Overall, the hope would be to teach the children about completing the cycle of taking waste and returning it back to the soil to help you grow again; developing a habit that can then be transferred to habits at home.
