About This Partner

Nestled in the heart of the Florida Keys, the island of Pigeon Key is the single most historically significant location in the island chain. In the early 1900s, the island housed 400 workers that built the Overseas Railway, the brainchild of Henry Flagler. Flagler—the Father of Florida—dreamed of a railroad linking Miami to Key West. Originally called “Flagler’s Folly,” the project upon completion took a different title, “The 8th Wonder of the World.” The five-acre Pigeon Key bustled with activity both during construction and after completion. Since Flagler’s work camp, the island has seen incredible changes and uses. Today, the Pigeon Key Foundation inhabits the island. A 501(c)-3 non-profit, the organization is devoted to protecting the cultural history of the Florida Keys by promoting its healthy future. The foundation offers daily guided historical tours.
