RecycleBank Expands its Rewards-for-Recycling Program Beyond Atlanta to Alpharetta and Peachtree City

NEW YORK (THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2010)—RecycleBank® joined officials from Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG), Alpharetta and Peachtree City today in announcing its expansion in the greater Atlanta area in Fulton and Fayette Counties. RecycleBank is a rewards program that motivates people to engage in greener behaviors, like household recycling, by rewarding them with points that are redeemable at local and national retailers, restaurants, pharmacies, grocers, and more. In November, RecycleBank partnered with the City of Atlanta, Rehrig Pacific and Coca-Cola in bringing the rewards-for-recycling pilot to 10,000 homes. Working with Republic, RecycleBank expands citywide to 15,000 households in Alpharetta and to 3,200 Republic customers in Peachtree City.

“As RecycleBank continues to expand across the United States, our vision of rewarding every household for recycling is becoming a reality,” RecycleBank CEO Ron Gonen said. “Republic Services has recognized the value that RecycleBank brings to communities by helping them reach their environmental goals, putting savings in their customers’ pockets and invigorating the local business community.”

This month, Republic delivered new 65-gallon recycling carts to Alpharetta and Peachtree City residents. With the new program comes a new way to recycle—single stream—in which all recyclables go into one container. No more sorting. When residents recycle, the amount of refuse is recorded by route and converted into points which get credited to that route’s participating recyclers. RecycleBank members earn five points for every two pounds of waste recycled and up to 450 points a month. Every 10 points equal up to $1 in reward value, and active members can experience a potential savings of at least $100-200 a year—true value in these difficult economic times.

“Republic recognizes the value this program offers for the residents in Alpharetta and Peachtree City,” Republic Services General Manager Ken Dillingham said. “Recycling is an important component of Alpharetta and Peachtree City’s solid waste plans, and RecycleBank’s meaningful incentives will help to save resources, ensuring a greener future for Fulton and Fayette Counties. And the best thing is, residents are automatically enrolled in the program, all they have to do is sign up with RecycleBank—it comes with our waste service.”

Points can be used to “shop” for rewards from hundreds of businesses in more than 20 categories which includes local businesses like Rita’s Water Ice, Waffle House, the Georgia Aquarium, The Coffee Pot, Buca di Beppo, Artuzzis Italian Kitchen, Sri Krisha Vilas, The Fresh Market, Zoo Atlanta, Mellow Mushroom, and Aria Salon and Spa. National businesses and brands include Nature Made, Friskies, Fancy Feast, Coca-Cola, Green Works, CVS/pharmacy, McDonald’s, Huggies, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Dick's Sporting Goods. There is also an option to donate points to local school environmental programs through the RecycleBank Green Schools Program.

After activating their RecycleBank accounts, residents can log on to www.RecycleBank.com or call 1-888-727-2978 to redeem rewards. Similar to frequent flier programs, the more a family recycles, the more RecycleBank points each household earns.

“As part of our continued focus on being a leading green community, Alpharetta was seeking a way to encourage our citizens to recycle more and put less into landfills,” Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas said. “By participating in this program, residents have the ability to earn and redeem RecycleBank points for hundreds of dollars worth of rewards, discounts and merchandise; which translates into real value for Alpharetta families. Plus, it’s nice to be rewarded for doing something good.”

“By offering a rewards program, Republic is encouraging more people to recycle and therefore reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill,” Peachtree City Mayor Don Haddix said. “The rewards support our local economy by promoting city shops and businesses. Everyone wins.”

RecycleBank services more than one million people across 25 states and in the United Kingdom. By cumulative recycling efforts, members have recycled more than 284,291 tons of material since 2005. For more information, visit www.RecycleBank.com.
