New Program Offers Residents Economic Benefits for Recycling

MERCHANTVILLE, N.J. (FRIDAY, JAN. 8, 2009) — Today, Merchantville joins area communities in rewarding its residents for recycling through a unique program with Recyclebank®. Launching in Philadelphia in February and already a success in Cherry Hill and Clayton, Recyclebank has partnered with Merchantville to dramatically increase household recycling volumes. Recyclebank encourages people to recycle by rewarding households with points for their efforts. Points are redeemable for merchandise, rewards, gift cards, groceries, products, services and more from local and national retailers, restaurants, grocers and others. Merchantville picks up recycling each Friday, and today is first pick up with the recycling rewards program.

“Partnering with Recyclebank is a great way to protect our environment, invigorate our local economy, keep our community clean, and deliver meaningful, everyday savings to Merchantville families,” Mayor Frank M. North said. “Everybody wins—recycling has never been so rewarding!”

This past month, recycling buckets were outfitted with special ID stickers that connect the address with individual Recyclebank accounts. Beginning today, recycling trucks read the identification stickers during waste pick up, record how much has been recycled and transmit that information to Recyclebank which then credits household accounts with points that can be used to “shop” for rewards from businesses in more than 20 categories.

After activating their Recyclebank accounts, Merchantville residents can log on to or call 1-888-727-2978 to redeem rewards from local reward partners such as Merchantville Diner, Pinsetter Bar and Bowl, Wirth Florist, Vincent’s Pizza, and others, as well as from a host of national partners such as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, Seventh Generation, Burt’s Bees, CVS/pharmacy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more. There is also an option to donate Points to local school environmental programs and to non-profit organizations. Similar to frequent flier programs, the more a family recycles, the more Recyclebank Points each household earns.

“By participating, residents have the ability to earn and redeem Recyclebank Points for hundreds of dollars worth of rewards, discounts and merchandise,” Mayor North added. “With the tough economy, these savings translate into real value for Merchantville families. Plus, it’s nice to be rewarded for doing something good.”

“As Recyclebank continues to expand across the United States, our vision of rewarding every house on every street for recycling is becoming a reality,” said Ron Gonen, co-founder and CEO of Recyclebank. “Merchantville recognized the value that Recyclebank brings to communities by helping them reach their environmental goals, putting savings in their residents’ pockets and invigorating the local business community. This environmental leadership shows area residents that recycling is something that they can do today to truly make a difference tomorrow.”

Merchantville residents must activate their Recyclebank account to receive rewards for recycling. They can do so online at or by calling the Recyclebank Customer Care Center at 1-888-727-2978. Recyclebank services more than one million people across 24 states. By cumulative recycling efforts, those households have recycled more than 320,000 tons of material, saving more than 283 million gallons of oil and 4.24 million trees.
