NEW YORK CITY—NOVEMBER 15, 2012—Recyclebank®, the company that rewards people for taking everyday green actions with discounts and deals, announced this week that its England-based members’ recycling performance has grown by up to three times faster than this year’s national average, based on a report issed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the country’s equivalent to the United States’ EPA. The report, “Local Authority Waste Management Statistics for England,” revealed 2011-2012 statistics showing that recycling performance in England has increased by 1.5 percent, from 41.5 percent to 43 percent.

Recyclebank communities, on the other hand, continue to exceed the current trend, including two boroughs in particular — Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead (RBWM) and Halton Borough Council (HBC). RBWM has added 4.5 percentage points to its recycling rate, and 3,300 tons more household waste was sent for recycling, an increase of 12.5 percent over last year. At the same time, HBC has also outperformed that national average, adding 1.8 percent  growth. This follow’s last year’s impressive performance, which saw recycling rates increase by five times the national average. Individual households in HBC are now discarding 101.5 pounds less residual waste and sent 3,000 tons more household waste for recycling, an increase of more than 14 percent over last year.

After starting in the U.S. in 2004, Recyclebank launched in the U.K. in 2009. Through its digital offerings and partnerships with municipalities, haulers, small businesses and corporate brands, in both regions Recyclebank incentivizes green actions, such as household recycling, with points that can be redeemed for discounts and deals from locally-based businesses and national brands.

“The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and Halton Borough Council serve as prime examples to their country of what can happen when communities band together and commit to a greener and more sustainable future,” said Jonathan Hsu, CEO of Recyclebank. “At Recyclebank, our mission is to engage and inspire our members to take more green actions. We’re ecstatic to see that this is indeed working in the U.K.”
