The city of Albuquerque's residential recycling program has collected 610 tons of recyclables since the program's inception in January. Albertson's and Garduño's of Mexico Restaurant have been the most popular retailers in the city's Recyclebank program that awards points to households that recycle.

Garduño's has redeemed more than 2,010 points on behalf of reward program participants and is the most popular locally owned retailer in the program. Points are redeemed for discounts and merchandise from local and national retailers who sign up for it.

"Garduño's of Mexico Restaurant and Cantina is excited to be a part of such an innovative program. We're happy to reward community residents who are doing their part to protect the environment by recycling at home," said David Garduño Sr., owner.

In the Albuquerque area, the top local business rewards participants behind Albertson's and Garduño's are John Brooks Supermarket, Papa Felipe's Mexican Restaurant, Hinkle Family Fun Center, ABQ City Limits Restaurant & Catering, El Herradero Meat Market & Restaurant, Marisco's Altamar & Mexican Food, Enchantment Chocolates, Cup O' Joe and the Farmers Markets.

Household recyclers can earn hundreds of dollars in reward value for annual recycling. The current recession offers an extra incentive to recycle.

Recyclebank is a growing national program that has diverted more than 156,000 tons of recyclables from landfills while households have cumulatively saved more than 1.5 million trees and 104 million gallons of oil through their recycling efforts.
