Residents Encouraged to Bank on their Recycling

Waste management firm Veolia Environmental Services and recycling incentive company Recyclebank has announced the trial launch of a recycling reward scheme.

The scheme, which will be trialled in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, hopes to encourage the 2,800 households to take part through rewards in goods and services from local and national businesses.

Veolia claims the initiative will be the UK’s first recycling reward scheme, which will begin on 1 June 2009.

Veolia Environmental Services deputy chief executive Paul Levett said: “We’re confident it will help increase recycling rates in the area and we hope it will encourage other local authorities to take up similar programmes. This is one of the many ways we’re working with our local authority partners to modernise the UK’s environmental practices and turn waste into a resource.”

Residents earn Recyclebank points each time they recycle or for the weight of materials they recycle. This is monitored by an identification chip fitted inside residents’ wheelie bins, which is recorded by special bin lifts fitted on to Veolia’s waste vehicles. These points can then be redeemed at various local and national businesses or as a donation to charities and local schools.

Residents can even activate and view their own Recyclebank account online.

Recyclebank president Matthew Tucker said: “We have significantly increased recycling volumes across the USA while bringing economic benefits to both local economies and residents alike. In today’s tough times, this scheme continues to resonate with all parties involved.”

Recyclebank was recently named Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and also as a 2009 Champion of the Earth by the UN. It services one million people across 19 states in America.

It is hoped the scheme will also reduce landfill costs for local authorities.
