GULF SHORES, Ala. — Beginning Feb. 9, the City of Gulf Shores along with Allied Waste will offer residents motivation and incentives to encourage them to recycle more items in their homes.

Recyclebank, the leading green rewards program that gives discounts and merchandise to residents who recycle, will start giving out points to residents every time the neighborhood’s recycling is collected.

Allied Waste will pick up residents recycling container and Recyclebank will convert the recycling weights into Recyclebank points. The points can be redeemed on for discounts on products and services from national retailers, restaurants, pharmacies and grocery stores.

“I want to thank the council for bringing this wonderful program to your city,” said Recyclebank representative Karen Zarin at Monday’s council meeting. “We are very excited about it.”

Zarin told council members and residents that everyone must have a part in making the program work.

“Our slogan is ‘Envision a world where nothing is wasted,’ and it is up to everyone to make that happen,” Zarin said. “This program will enable everyone to do something, and collectively some very good things are going to be happening.”

Zarin explained that every other week, when recyclables are collected, points will be added to that residents account. Once those points are added to your account, you can go shopping for many of the items offered by the more than 100 national reward partners.

“There is really something for everybody and you don’t need a lot of points to get started,” said Zarin.

Gulf Shores residents should be receiving instructions through the mail very soon, explaining how to go online and set up an account.

“It is a very simple little registration with your name and your e-mail. After that, you will be able to go online and check your points, go shopping for rewards, and there are some other ways you will be able to earn some points, so at your leisure, you will be able to browse the site to find out how that can be done as well.”

Zarin said the website rewards items are listed by category, to make it easier for those participating in the program to find what they are looking for.

“If you are looking for restaurants, you can bypass pharmacies, sporting good stores, or all of the other places in order to find specifically what you are looking for.”

Recycle carts will begin being delivered to residents during the first week of February.

“This will be a great time for all of us to get out and encourage our neighbors to recycle as well. We are all in this together,” Zarin said.

“We want to do our share to protect the environment, and I want to thank councilman Steve Jones for personally taking this and running with it,” Mayor Robert Craft said. “A lot of work was done to make sure that we involved ourselves with the kind of company with the same goals that we have, and these folks have demonstrated to us that they are enthusiastic and committed to doing this the right way, so we are happy to be partners.”
