The City of Hollywood and its recycling partner, RecycleBank, have earned top honors from The Collins Center for Public Policy for the recycling rewards program that began in the City in February.

Additionally, the latest numbers on recycling in Broward County show Hollywood has earned the top spot among all cities in the county for its residents recycling more than 826 tons of recyclable material during April, making Hollywood the lead recycler in the county for the first time in a decade.

On June 4, Sustainable Florida-Collins Center named the City's recycling initiative a Best Practice in the Government category for 2010. The City of Hollywood and RecycleBank were selected from a record 109 entries. A panel of leaders in government, business, academic institutions and civic and environmental organizations evaluated the nominees based on outcomes achieved, the ability to duplicate the effort and overall success of the initiative.

Hollywood is the first city in Broward County and the largest city in the Southeast to offer the RecycleBank program to its residents. Close to 32,000 households in Hollywood received new 95-gallon recycling carts earlier this year, and the City transitioned to single-stream recycling. In the first month, Hollywood increased its recycling by 127 percent over the previous year.

"This is a huge accomplishment for the residents of Hollywood," said Mayor Peter Bober. "It shows our residents are concerned about the environment and are willing to take part in innovative programs that work. Now, we need to continue our efforts to keep Hollywood on top when it comes to recycling and sustainable practices."
