Pleasant Hill Academy School

Cincinnati, Ohio

Eco-conscious Food Supply
Budget: $2489

Pleasant Hill Academy School is a pre-K to eighth-grade school which currently serves 600 students in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the current climate of standardized testing, reading and math are the required school focus while science and social studies are not given equal time.

Our Green Plan: Create nine raised-bed garden plots, one for each of grade level teams to plant and harvest. Teaching gardening skills and nutrition helps to encourage students to make healthy life choices. In addition, it will empower students with the skills to grow their own food, the knowledge to make healthy food choices, and also teach the value of gardening as exercise. We hope to expand the growing season though adding cold frames tops to the raised beds to provide fresh vegetables earlier and later in the season and to garden as a part of our summer school program. We will document our gardens through taking pictures and having students can journal about their experiences.
