A Force for Good

When it comes to inspiring action, we like to take a page out of Isaac Newton’s playbook. Sure, Recyclebank wasn’t around when he wrote that “an object at rest tends to remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force,” but we’d like to think that we’re living, breathing proof of that First Law of Motion. We encourage small, everyday actions by teaching you how they can benefit the environment, and we reward you for making the effort. By working with municipalities and waste haulers, we’ve already inspired our members to spare billions of pounds of waste from the landfill.

Game Changers

Call it a classroom daydream. Call it a moment of inspiration. No matter how you classify it, the moment that Ron Gonen envisioned a way to increase individual recycling, it forever changed the course of his life and planted a tiny seed that grew into the company we are today. What Ron realized was that people want to recycle more; they just need a little bit of a nudge. So in 2002, he went to dinner with fellow Columbia MBA Student Patrick FitzGerald and discussed his idea for Recyclebank. A year later, they completed the company’s founding business plan and by 2004, they rolled out a pilot recycling rewards program in Philadelphia. Today, Recyclebank partners with communities all over the country and offers new ways for you to learn, earn points and shop online. Our focus hasn’t changed, but we’re looking for innovative ways to inspire our members every day.

Recyclebank’s goal is to inspire smarter choices for a more sustainable future. We believe that individual actions, such as increasing recycling or learning about greener ways to purchase, consume or dispose of products, can add up to a big impact for our planet.

We believe in the carrot, not the stick. We’ve learned that a mix of economic and social nudges, when packaged with education, deepens people’s participation and creates habitual behavior change.

    When you make it your business to build a better tomorrow today, it’s important to remember that we’re all on a journey. To chart our progress and ensure that we’re always heading in the right direction, we set up yearly check-ins to take a look at how far we’ve come. Our Annual Sustainability Report reminds us of the achievements and it puts new targets on the radar for the coming year. We share this review with partners and members like you so that we can feel good about the impact we’re making collectively.

    Funding Tomorrow’s Leaders

    Since 2007, the Recyclebank Green Schools Program has awarded close to $500,000 to more than 150 schools for projects designed to creatively improve their schools. With the launch of our new online shop, One Twine, we’re proud to announce that we will donate 5% of profits to the Green Schools Program, up to $50,000 a year. Here’s how it works: Teachers submit project proposals along with the budgets needed to help their goals become realities. The brainstorming period takes place at the start of each school year, and the donation period runs from the beginning of January through early spring. Learn more

    Out of the Office. In the Community.

    Since we make it our business to help people improve their lives and their communities, it’s only right that we take breaks to focus on our own. Each year, Recyclebank team members work together on a local community improvement project for Earth Day. While that’s one big way we’re working together in our own neighborhoods, our team members also get one paid volunteer day each quarter to donate their time for non-profit or community organizations that they’re passionate about.

Working with a wide variety of brands, we only select items that make it through our screening process.
