About Charlton St. School

Charlton Street School’s Project Greenlight will focus on two primary teaching strategies: increasing student awareness of basic environmental problems and offering students realistic and practical strategies to help keep the earth clean and green. Through this ongoing project, students will be able to understand some of the reasons behind the earths problems and they will learn what they can do to help reduce them. Several in class and school wide lessons will be completed through Project Greenlight.

Learn how to set up and start the foundations of their compost bins. They will do this by collecting fallen leaves near the playground to dump into the bins, and also by sorting their leftover food wastes, including their biodegradable trays, into separate bins (trash and compost) in the cafeteria weekly. Through classroom discussion and creating reminder posters for the cafeteria, students will be taught what foods and other materials are compost friendly and what are not.

Study the changes happening in the compost bins as each class will take turns rotating the soil. As the students do this, they will be able to study and discuss what is happening to the waste that has been added in the compost. They will observe and report on the breakdown of the trays, old food, and leaves that are turning into healthy, fresh soil.

Working together, the students will transport the soil from the compost bins into the courtyard of our school during sunny spring afternoons. They will be able to remove invasive plants and lay out fresh soil for the remaining plants and trees. As they do this, they will be taught the importance of maintaining a healthful environment that they can enjoy with pride.

Why we do this
RecycleBank makes every effort to be a good neighbor and an active contributor in the neighborhoods in which we do business. We believe in working with today’s kids to build strong and vital communities as well as future environmental leaders. Our RecycleBank Green Schools Program offers a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and our environment.

In addition to the great grant opportunity, we believe households will turn their homes inside out trying to find more recyclables, so they can earn more Points to donate and redeem. In our plan, everybody wins, especially the environment.
