Big Brothers Big Sisters exists because many children lack the extra care and attention of an adult role model, a friend. We keep kids on track and prepare them to better cope with the challenges that face all children growing up in today’s society.
We know that our programs encourage honesty and hard work. We know that young teenagers who meet regularly with their Big Brother or Big Sister are 46 percent less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs and 27 % less likely to start drinking.
They are 52% less likely ti skip school and 37% less likely to skip a class.
They are almost 1/3 less likely to resort to violence as a means of problem solving.
They are more trusting of their parent and less likely to lie to them.
They feel more supported by their peers.
We have 2 programs, a community based program where volunteers meet with children at a time and place convenient to child and volunteer, and a school based program where volunteers meet with a child at a school one hour per week. Both programs have positive results.
Children with positive consistent mentor in their lives are 97% less likely to become involved in the juvenile justice system.
