Circle Benton Elementary (CBE) is in Benton, Kansas. CBE serves K through 6th grade with 218 students. We have the opportunity to transform a school courtyard from four trees and a slab of concrete, into a beautiful, sustainable, outdoor classroom.

Our Green Plan: An outdoor classroom, named “Benton’s Backyard,” will be a permanent addition to the school with a learning center that will include: water management, soils and composting, wildlife habitat, ecology and the environment, entomology, and growing vegetables, herbs and fruits. Students will reap the benefits of hard work as they grow their own food, maintain compost bins, water plants from rain barrels, and create wildlife habitat. Benton’s Backyard will have five raised beds, one being handicap accessible, for growing vegetables and herbs. Our soil will be collected, analyzed, watered, amended, hoed, planted, weeded, and mixed by our students. Teaching students the value of soil and how to grow food can be one of the greatest life lessons we could provide our future leaders.
